mix-meisterI’ve been the mix-meister for the past few months. Been all over the place mixing records for various people. It’s been a blast checking out new rooms and playing with new toys. My new favorite sounding mix room in town is the Icon A room over at OmniSound. Used to be a mastering room, but it sounds totally killer to mix in, too. I had the pleasure of mixing a full-length for 10-year-old singer/songwriter (yes, she writes her own stuff) Bailey Dozier in there. She’s kind of like Disney Lady Gaga. Pretty crazy.

I’ve also been in search of a studio to call my musical home. Looking for the perfect fit – a nice, medium sized space for mixing and overdubs. If you know of anything that may fit the bill, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

MCI JH24 - Run With Bulls Man, I’ve been slammed and loving every minute of it! Here’s a quick rundown of some of the fun I’ve been having:

  • Started work on 4 new Rae Hering songs. We’re working on string arrangements now and should have things finished up pretty soon.
  • Lots of album projects – getting to track to tape is the BEST. It’s been so long! It feels amazing to not be staring at a monitor all day. Analog tracking sessions at Quad’s Neve Room and CountyQ with Run With Bulls, Emily Dodson, Helen Caddes, and others. PHAT sounds. Love it! Studer A800 2″ 16-track has to be my favorite recording medium.
  • An extraordinary amount of mixing – usually about 15-20 publishing demos per week + album projects for Space Attack! (finally mixing it!), Blue Heart Hour, and many others.

I’m going blank on a bunch of other fun stuff I’ve been into lately. All I know is that I’m busier and happier than I’ve ever been!
I’m also thinking about changing my website to be more of a blog format – more posts about sessions, but I’d also like to start an informative section with tips and tricks, gear I love, and other geeky stuff like that.

I did a really cool string session this past weekend for Chad McClarnon’s new short film entitled “A New Life.” The music was composed by Uncle Skeleton and is totally rad. We had an excellent string quartet and got some really great tracks. Here’s a short behind-the-scenes video:

Rae Hering piano/vocal demosI’ve been in the studio with Rae Hering again – working on piano/vocal demos for all of her sixteen (!!!) new songs. There are no plans in the immediate future for a full release, but I’m sure she’ll come up with something awesome to throw your away ASAP. Keep your ears peeled! These songs won’t disappoint for lovers of her quirky, jazzy, peppy style!

Looks like I’ll be mixing the new Jeff Black record next week. Great songs featuring Jeff, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, and others! I’m excited to be a part of this project!
